The project for the Italian Pavilion for EXPO 2020 proposes a dynamic entity that displays the Italian cultural identity through the three guidelines: Architecture, Nature and Technology. These themes guide visitors on an emotional, tactile and visual journey, combining aesthetic and functional codes with those of innovation and sustainability.
The Pavilion is characterized by a longitudinal body slightly translated with respect to the plot, composed of two elements: an architectural basement, which contains all the functions and services, and a transparent structure made of wire mesh, with iconic and climatic function, which constitutes the shading of the open spaces of the Pavilion.

The fusion between the material and the ethereal elements give life to the great central spaces – the Prologue and the Square, which are pervaded by water and garden, key elements of the great tradition of the Italian Gardens. If the volume shaped by man is clearly visible on the outside, the architectural lines disappear completely to be covered with vegetation, water, wire mesh and glass, which create an enveloping and suspended environment. A thin catwalk creates a dynamic cut on the façade, delineating itself as a point of view on the Expo. The waiting space is configured as an elegant progressive approach in which appear delicate blades of water alternating with the flooring.

These are the introduction to the elegant pool of water that completely composes the Prologue. The environment features monumental transparent pillars in wire mesh, pilasters with Corinthian capitals, culminating in a large pavilion vault with a zenith opening over the sky, thanks to the large central staircase in suspended elements. Here the Italian Pavilion opens and becomes a Square, the historic hub of every Italian city. The “Grand Finale” which represents the final apotheosis of the route, is equally dramatic when compared to the Prologue and the Square, but this time in digital forms.
